Let’s talk money. Unemployment is up. It’s up a lot in fact. You may be one of those people without a job so let’s talk about where you can get some money. We’re going to keep this short because you want to know how to file for unemployment and information about filing for unemployment online.
First, we have to understand that each state is different. You’re going to have to do one of two things to find out the exact steps for your state: either call your county benefits office, normally called something like “jobs and family services” or go online to your state’s website and look it up there. If you are reading this article, you most likely have Internet access so that shouldn’t be an issue. Most states allow you to file for unemployment online or by telephone so don’t feel like you’re going to have to go to the office and ask for the application.
I strongly suggest you go to the office’s website and read, read read. First you should find out if you’re eligable. Just because you don’t have a job, that doesn’t mean you’re eligable. It all depends on how you lost your job and once again, each state is different. In general, if you were fired or laid off, you get benefits. If you quit your job, you aren’t going to get much and maybe nothing at all.
So let’s get to it. Let’s talk money and where to find it. Now that we know where to go for our state, I’m going to give you some of the guidelines. First, compile all of you information. You know how the government works. Anything that is an official anything, you’re going to need. Driver’s license, Social Security card, dates of last places worked, why you lost your job, everybody in your family and all of their information, and citizenship information if you came from another country.
I know, all of this is a pain but I told you I would tell you how to file for unemployment. I didn’t say it would be quick and easy but the good news is that filing for unemployment online makes the process easier.
Next step, after you compile all of your information, get online or call the phone number (although online is much easier) and complete the information. It’s going to take some time so make sure you don’t need to run out the door in 5 minutes. There is a lot of information that it will ask for. Let’s talk money and about how you can make sure that you will get NOTHING: If you want to be denied, just fill out the questions that you feel are necessary.
See where I’m going with this. Along with talking about how to file for unemployment, we have to talk about what not to do. These questions are going to get personal but if you decided that you don’t want to give that information, you will get nothing. Also, if they catch you lying, you may still get something: A fine and maybe a jail sentence. Make sure all of your information is truthful. Remember that filing for unemployment online leaves a record so don’t lie about anything.
Once you have done all of that, wait for a phone call. It’s not a quick process so don’t think you’re going to hear something tomorrow.
